I noticed how remarkably similar the German adjective for strange or foreign (fremd) was to the word for friend (Freund) and thought that that might be the basis for an interesting little wordmark experiment. The idea would be, as the caption suggests, that there is no such thing as a stranger, there are only friends, with whom one has not yet been acquainted. The sentiment is somewhat naive and definitely debatable, but that’s another topic for another time.
I settled on this quasi ligature, which combines the letters u and m. This makes the word both Freund and fremd at the same time. It also makes it cross-typeface… typefacial? Cross typefacial. Typefacial is now a word. It remains recognisable across different typefaces, that’s what I’m trying to say. I therefore used it as an opportunity to showcase some of my earliest typeface design work.
